The Evolution Of Print & Graphic Design

The times of now have been infiltrated by all sorts of things and printing and graphic design is one of them. Especially as far as marketing is concerned- the role that the two above play cannot be denied. But to better understand what they can do to help promote communication and marketing. You need to go back in time to the days when the two were thought of and how they rose to become so popular.

Evolution of printing: The concept of printing was first applied on the textiles and later on the paper. It began with a technique called woodblock printing widely used in the East-Asia for printing text images and patterns. It was originated in China before 220 and from an African country called Egypt in the 4th century. The best known and the most popular Japanese woodblock art print is ‘Ukiyo-e’. In the European countries, the same concept was applied to produce block-books in the fifteenth century.

However, history tells of an ancient practice of art in the Mesopotamian ages of 3000BC. So from this one can conclude that printing has been around for thousands of years. Of course it is not as advanced as it is today but it was pointing in our direction. Printing of mobile objects was done in the 1450’s since before then only stationary stuff was being printed on.

Evolution of graphic design: There is a difference in between printing and graphics. Unlike the printing, the print graphic design is produced from some visual statements on surfaces like wall, pottery, canvas, paper, computer screen, stone or even landscape. Graphics comprises of everything that is shared in the creation of charts, signs, logos, graphs, symbols, line art, geometric designs, etc.

Graphic design has an inevitable place in the advertisement, website and publication sector. It is estimated that the evolution of graphic designs took place in the southern France. Here, one can easily witness the graphic designs of animals in the Chauvet Cave. They are believed to be created by the primitive people over 30,000 B.C. and similar forms of designs can be observed in Lascaux Cave of France also. They were estimated to be drawn over 14,000 B.C., further one can easily observe the designs of primitive hunters at a place called Bhimbetka rock shelters in India and to one’s surprise they are over 7,000 B.C. old.

3000 years later is when graphic art started taking shape and this is about the time that writing started coming up. Graphic art was also used in most of the books that are stored in national libraries and museums. For instance the Book of Durrow that historians say was written somewhere in the 7th century.

Graphic art can be traced in manuscripts and other books of old. Fast forward to the 21st century and graphic designs are used commonly like with the Olympics and in trademarks like Google.
